Deputy CEO of Rosatom and Head of the Northern Sea Route Directorate Vyacheslav Ruksha and Atomflot CEO Mustafa Kashka visited the Kirov Plant to inspect progress on the construction of PTU-72 steam turbine units for Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers.

Representatives from Rosatom inspected the production areas at the Kirov Energomash Plant (part of the Kirovsky Zavod group), where steam turbine units are currently being manufactured. At the testing facility, Kirovsky Zavod CEO Georgy Semenenko and Director of Kirov Energomash Alexey Sadkov showed the visitors the main port-side turbine generator for the Ural icebreaker. The turbine generator is in the final stages of preparation for acceptance testing, which is set to begin in mid-September.

Vyacheslav Ruksha and Mustafa Kashka also confirmed that Kirov Energomash was working within the agreed timeframes for the construction of steam turbine unit equipment for the Yakutia and Chukotka icebreakers. So far, all the frames for the main turbine generators for the Yakutia and two out of the four frames for the Chukotka have been completed. Casts for the high-pressure cylinder casings are being processed using a new ŠKODA milling and boring machine.

“Now the plant can produce turbine blades for high-pressure cylinders in full and ahead of schedule, and has also started manufacturing low-pressure cylinders for the main turbine generators,” said Alexey Sadkov.

Representatives from Rosatom also visited the Petrostal Specialized Steels and Alloys Laboratory, which is currently under construction, and the brand-new transmission workshop at the Petersburg Tractor Plant (part of the Kirovsky Zavod group).

The visitors concluded by discussing prospects for cooperation between Kirovsky Zavod and Atomflot on the manufacture of steam turbine units for the icebreaker Leader, which is under construction at the Zvezda Shipyard in Russia’s Far East. A tender to select the steam turbine unit supplier will take place at the end of the year. Another item on the meeting’s agenda was the possibility of using a steam turbine unit manufactured by Kirov Energomash for floating nuclear power plants.
