Kirovsky Zavod Will Manufacture a Steam-Turbine Plant for the World's Largest Nuclear-Powered Ice-Breaker

Kirov-Energomash (a subsidiary of the Kirov Group) won a tender to create a plant for the pilot universal nuclear ice-breaker of Project 22220.

Kirov-Energomash won JSC Baltiysky Zavod Shipbuilding's tender, which is worth billions, to develop, manufacture and deliver a steam-turbine plant for the world's largest and most powerful nuclear ice-breaker. Under the contract, the Kirov Group subsidiary will also take part in assembling, starting-up, commissioning and delivering the equipment, as well as conducting complex mooring, pilot-bridge and glacial testing of the vessel.

The equipment being developed by Kirov-Energomash is designed to supply electric power to rowing electrical units and the vessel consumers of the pilot universal nuclear ice-breaker of Project 22220. The steam-turbine plant includes two main turbo-generators, each with a capacity of 36 MW, consisting of a steam turbine with a regulation system and generator, feeding, condensate, and circulatory pumps, and other auxiliary systems and mechanisms.

Before being shipped to the customer, the turbo-generators and auxiliary equipment will be tested at a specially constructed stand in one of the company's workshops. The steam-turbine plant's delivery set will also include an instrument and accessories for the equipment's service and maintenance and a set of monitoring and measuring devices. The contract will be implemented by 2015.

The execution of JSC Baltiysky Zavod Shipbuilding's order is a continuation of a series of similar projects that were carried out by Kirovsky Zavod over previous years. The company has gained enormous practical experience in creating efficient power generators for nuclear ice-breakers and ice-class vessels with nuclear power supply units. For example, all of the nuclear powered vessels built in the USSR for the Murmansk Shipping Company are equipped with Kirovsky Zavod turbines, starting with the nuclear powered ice-breaker "Lenin" and ending with "50 Let Pobedy."

The universal nuclear ice-breaker of Project 22220 will be the largest and most powerful ice-breaker in the world. Its expanded width allows it to guide tankers having a deadweight of up to 70 thousand tons alone in Arctic conditions. There are no restrictions on its navigation area. The permanent area of its exploitation is the Western Arctic Region and the shallow strips of Siberian rivers, and during the summer-fall season - the Eastern Arctic Region.
