Kirovets tractor family celebrates 53 years

Today, July 13, 2015, marks 53 years from the day when No. 1 Kirovets К-700 Tractor rolled off the conveyor of Kirovsky Zavod.

The history of the Kirovets tractor started in the spring of 1961, when the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Nikita Khruschev was on a visit to the US. Khruschev loved the powerful John Deere wheeled tractor that he was shown, and, upon returning to the USSR, ordered that a similar kind of tractor be created in his homeland. In the fall of the same year, Kirovsky Zavod received a governmental order to design and start mass production of wheeled tractors with a capacity of 200-220 horse power. The task was delegated to the Specialized Tractor Design Bureau (KB-3).

Kirovets К-700, the first of five experimental tractors, was delivered on July 13, 1962. Soon, production of the new tractor commenced, and the vehicle became quite popular in agriculture, the oil, gas and mining industries and construction.

In Soviet times, К-700 was referred to as Bogatyr of the Steppes. The tractor was 7 m long, more than 3 m tall, and weighed 11 tons. It could exceed 30 km/h. Designers at the plant kept working on improving the tractor, regularly producing various modifications to the base model.

The 400,000th Kirovets tractor was made in 1989. The first new mass-produced tractor, К-744Р, rolled off the conveyor belt on March 10, 2000. Its arrival was widely celebrated.

In 2014, St. Petersburg Tractor Plant CJSC, an affiliate company of Kirovsky Zavod OJSC, completed extensive modernization and restyling of the Kirovets К-744 model. In 2014, the enterprise ranked first in terms of the volume of sales of large agricultural tractors in Russia and Kazakhstan, ahead of all other competitors, including leading foreign companies.

The Kirovets tractor today is one of the key Russian brands, recognized and valued not only in the Russian Federation but also far beyond its borders. In 2015, despite the economic downturn and industrial recession, Kirovets tractors have remained in high demand, which continues to grow. Kirovets products are in demand by Russian agribusiness companies, CIS consumers and agricultural companies from Western Europe and the rest of the world.
